The Bombay plague of 1896

Ranjit Kandalgaonkar’s artwork for the exhibition ‘Ayurvedic Man: Encounters with Indian medicine’, uses archival material from the Wellcome Library and the Asiatic Library in Mumbai, to explore the 1896 Bombay plague epidemic. The plague outbreak in India killed thousands, with the British authorities implementing draconian measures to deal with the rapid spread of the disease.
